Czech Trams 1 - Prague Part 2
This programme is the second part of two produced from a visit by the independent transport videos cameras in July 2010. The filming takes place in the central area of Prague as well as taking journeys to a number of the many suburbs by various types of tram. Filming starts on a Tatra T3 set, 8404 + 8405 on route 18 to Klárov where we film the action before moving onto Nábŕ. Edvarda Beneše. Bridges in Prague are always good vantage points for filming and Čechův Most is no exception. We take another ride, this time on T3 set 8254 + 8160 on route 3 to Národní and then to the famous Wenceslas Square to film the trams in service at this tourist attraction.
Other locations include Mánesův Most, Klárov and Malostranské where we board new Skoda tram 9168 to Smichov on route 12. Smichov is the former Tatra factory site and is now partly occupied by a new shopping centre, as well as being one of the city’s busiest tram intersections. During our filming some of the track was undergoing maintenance, therefore reducing some of the movements. However there is plenty of action for you to enjoy! We then take a ride on refurbished Tatra T3 set 8268 + 8511, also on route 12 to the Bus Station and Tram Interchange. Here we capture not only trams, but also buses, some in Arriva livery. The suburb of Sídliště Barrandov is our next location where we board T3 set 8362 + 8363 for the impressive run down to Hlubočepy before returning to the city centre for more filming at Vodičkova. Filming also takes place at Lehovec terminus and back at Národní. We then take a ride on Skoda 9168 to Křížova and then board T3 set 8181 +8182 on route 7 to Vozovna – a busy suburb with a tram depot. Our final location is Vinohradská where we capture action on this impressive tram system.
The tram fleet in Prague is made up of over 900 trams that are operated by DPP, Dopravní podnik hlavino mesa Prahy (Prague Public Transport Company). They operate 25 daytime routes and 9 night routes covering approximately 140km. The most numerous tram type is the Tatra T3, used in either one or two car formations. Prague has operated some 1,200 out of the 14,000 of this type produced since 1960. Most are in the ubiquitous red and cream livery, with others carrying advertising liveries. 24 of these vehicles have been rebuilt with a low floor centre section and are finished in a smart maroon and silver scheme. There is also a sizable fleet of the 1980’s built Tatra KT8D5, in a three car formation and these are bi-directional unlike the T3s. The latest trams are Porsche styled Skoda Elektra 14Ts of which there are 60 five section vehicles.
