Blackpool's Buses
2017 & 2018
Every
transport enthusiast knows that Blackpool, the famous seaside resort on
England’s northwest coast, is noted for its historic and modern tramway
system
and this being so, the buses are often overlooked. However
this is not the case with the independent
transport videos cameras!
This
is our third programme featuring the buses of Blackpool Transport, the
first in
2008 showing the fleet in the ‘Metro’ liveries, our second in 2010 as
the
yellow and black swooping livery was being introduced and now in 2018
as the ‘Palladium’
brand is being established, featuring not only a completely new look,
but a
fleet of brand new buses! This DVD
programme was filmed in the late summer of 2017 and in July 2018, so it
shows a
number of the older buses before they left the fleet during 2017 and
the latest
arrivals in 2018. We also feature the
buses of Stagecoach and some of the local independents to complete the
scene.
Blackpool Transport introduced
the ‘Palladium’ brand in 2015. The base
colour of the livery is mid-grey and this is complimented by a lemon
swoop with
a chrome fleet name. At the time of
filming the ‘Palladium’ fleet was made up of 55 ADL Enviro400 City
double-deckers delivered during 2016 & 2017. The
single-decker fleet contained 8 Volvo
B7RLEs with Plaxton Centro bodywork, 9 Mercedes-Benz Citaros and 17 ADL
Enviro
200MMCs that had just been delivered as we began filming in July 2018!
Older members of the fleet retain the yellow
and black livery and these include a number of Dennis/Transbus Tridents
with
East Lancs bodywork and some Wrightbus bodied Volvo B7RLE
single-deckers as
well as some Optare Solos filmed during the 2017 visit. Of
particular interest are the East Lancs
bodied DAF double-deckers that began service with Bus Vannin on the
Isle of
Man, numbered between 354 and 372. Look
out for Volvo 524 and Dennis Trident 332 as they are painted in a green
and
cream heritage livery.
The 2017 filming
takes place along Blackpool Promenade and in Lytham town centre on
Clifton
Street. A visit to St Annes completes
the 2017 review. The majority of this
programme was filmed in July 2018. We
begin our filming during the busy late afternoon period in the town
centre at
various locations and then move along to the Promenade, where we see a
good
number of buses returning to the Rigby Road depot at the end of their
duties
for the day. Further locations include a
visit to Fleetwood and Cleveleys. At
Cleveleys we also see ‘Balloon’ tram 711 running through on a driver
training
duty. Our cameras then take a ride on
428 (SN17 MHA) an ADL Enviro400 City on Route 7 from Starr Gate to
Lytham town
centre. At Lytham we film the action and
also at St Annes town centre, both places being a hive of activity with
both
Blackpool Transport and Stagecoach buses.
We complete this Blackpool’s Buses programme with a few trams!
At Starr Gate we see historic single-deck
Brush car 623 setting off on a Promenade tour and a repositioning
movement of
brand new Bombardier Flexity 2 tram 017.
Our final shots show the first Flexity tram, 001 arriving at Starr Gate
as the very latest Flexity 018 departing!
Enjoy!
