Kingsbridge Vintage Bus Running Day 2019
This delightful event
organised by the Thames Valley & Great Western Omnibus Trust, often known
as the ‘Kingsbridge 7’ 6” Vintage Bus Running Day’ is now in its twelfth
year. In previous years the event just featured
buses and coaches built to that width due to the narrow lanes, but more
recently larger vehicles have joined the ranks of superbly turned out buses and
coaches that operate in and around the area of the pretty town of Kingsbridge
in Devon on one Saturday in September.
This is the second time, the independent transport videos cameras
have attended the event to record the operation of over 40 preserved
buses and
coaches in action for you to enjoy. As with most of our DVD programmes
featuring running days, we start bright and early in the centre of
Kingsbridge
where we record the arrivals and departures of the buses and coaches at
the
small bus station. There are a wide
variety of vehicle types and bus companies represented, as you will see
on this
programme. For example, double-deckers
are represented by a London Transport RTL, a Leyland Atlantean,
Olympian,
Bristol G and K types, LD and FLF Lodekkas and a number of Bristol
VRTs. Single-deckers include a Leyland Tiger PS2,
AEC Regal, Reliance, a rare Bristol H type and Bristol L types
featuring both
bus and coach bodywork, Bristol SUs with ECW bodywork and Bristol LHs
with a
variety of body types and sizes! A modern Dennis Dart and Optare Solo
are also
seen together with an unusual Beadle-Bedford with Beadle bodywork, in
fact too
many to mention here. Our cameras take a ride on Western National 1969
(468
FTT), a 1960 Bristol Lodekka FLF6G with an ECW H68F body on service
101A to
Aveton Gifford. Not only do we get the
passengers’ view from the upper and lower deck, but we have put a
camera in the
cab so you can see first hand what it is like for the driver as he
skilfully
navigates the Lodekka around the narrow roads of south Devon.
Another ride is taken on the beautifully
restored Western National 692 (EDV 555D), a Bristol SUL4A with an ECW
B36F body
on service 106 to Moreleigh. These
lovely little buses were ideally suited for the rural services they
were
intended for, easily negotiating the narrow Devon and Cornish
lanes. Again you will get two perspectives of the
journey. A camera is in the cab to see
what the driver sees, another is in the saloon to see the passengers
point of view. Superb scenery and narrow lanes is the order
of the day - you will not be disappointed!
There is plenty of filming in Kingsbridge in and around the bus station
as well as some dramatic footage as the buses ascend and descend the
hill on
Ilbert Road. Our filming concludes at the bus station as the final
buses arrive
and depart for home ending a most enjoyable day. A big thank you
to Colin Billington and his
team for organising this event.
