Edinburgh Trams - Trams to Newhaven

It was in 2008 that work began on the construction of the new Edinburgh tramway.

The current fleet consists of 27 CAF trams built to an Edinburgh design at their factory in Spain.  Their livery is a version of the bus livery featuring madder red and silver on a mostly white base with an Edinburgh Trams logo. The official opening of the initial new tramway route took place on Saturday 31st May 2014 running from Edinburgh Airport to York Place in the city centre.  After many years of discussions and debate the final section of the first phase opened on 7th June 2023 running from Picardy Place, just a few metres beyond York Place to Leith, Ocean Terminal and terminating at Newhaven.

The independent transport videos cameras have filmed a comprehensive view of the new line and a reminder of the whole route just missing out the airport section.  Our programme begins at Ingliston Park & Ride where our cameras board car 268 for the journey to Newhaven.  We begin filming the route from the tram driver’s eye view at Picardy Place and film the entire journey passing through each stop: McDonald Road, Balfour Street, Foot of the Walk, The Shore, Port of Leith, Ocean Terminal and Newhaven.  At Newhaven we film the stop and the crossovers just prior to the terminus.  Line-side filming takes place at Ocean Terminal, Port of Leith, The Shore, Foot of the Walk, Balfour Street, McDonald Road and Picardy Place.  At the McDonald Road stop look out for the excellent model shop, Harburn Hobbies, which has a ‘Harburn Halt’ sign fixed to their shop window - they also stock our DVDs!  At Picardy Place we board car 253 for the journey back to Ingliston Park & Ride.  We have placed a camera behind the driver to film the entire line back to Ingliston.  The stops seen are:  St Andrews Square, Princes Street, West End, Haymarket, Murrayfield Stadium, Balgreen, Saughton, Bankhead, Edinburgh Park Station, Edinburgh Park Central, Gyle Centre, Edinburgh Gateway, Gogarburn and Ingliston Park & Ride. There are helpful subtitles to guide you on your journey as we record this comprehensive view of Edinburgh’s tramway.  Enjoy the ride.
