This DVD is part one
of two programmes from the cameras of independent transport videos looking
at buses operating in Scotland during 2023.
The ‘Electric Special’ title refers to the growing number of ‘electric’
buses that are entering service and are seen on this programme running
alongside their diesel cousins.
In this
programme we cover Glasgow, Paisley and Kilmarnock. The Glasgow filming takes
place in March, August and October.
Locations include George Square, Buchannan bus station, Renfrew Street,
Renfield Street, Hope Street, Union Street, Argyle Street and many more. The
main operators in Glasgow are Firstbus and McGill’s. Both companies now operate large fleets of
battery-electric buses. Other operators
seen are West Coast Motors, Stagecoach and some independents. Colourful liveries are in abundance, as you
will see! In August McGill’s began
operating their City Swift X36/7 services from Falkirk and Stirling to Glasgow
with ADL400MMC double-deckers in a smart new livery of blue and off white and we
see them in service on this programme.
You will also see the Ember
Yutong TCe12 battery-electric coach that runs into Glasgow from Dundee. Also look out for McGill’s 4700 (LG71 DNO),
their only BYD/ ADL200MMC-EV battery-electric single-decker that operates
alongside their large fleet of Yutong E10 and E12 battery-electric
single-deckers. Whilst in Glasgow during
August, our cameras take a ride on McGill’s J5027 (SG71 OTN), a Yutong E12 with
a B37F body on a 38 service to Paisley.
On arrival at Paisley we film the bus action on Gauze Street, New
Street, Causeyside Street, St Mirren Street and High Street. Here nearly all of the buses are Yutong
battery-electric single-deckers from the McGill’s fleet with only the odd
diesel bus running through. The Firstbus
route 9 from Glasgow also uses electric buses in the form of BYD/ADL200MMC-EV
single-deckers.
We return to Glasgow for
further filming where a good selection of buses are seen in service. Our cameras return to Glasgow in October
whilst filming at the Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust’s superb open weekend of
where a further DVD was filmed, to see some more contemporary bus action at
Killermont Street, Montrose Street and George Square. In August our cameras visited
Kilmarnock. Since our last visit in 2022
Stagecoach have introduced a fleet of Volvo BZL battery-electric single-deckers
with MCV 10.9m B37F bodies replacing the BYD/ADL200MMC-EV buses that have now moved
to their Ayr depot. The older Volvo
7900e electric single-deckers are still in service at Kilmarnock and are also seen
on this programme. Filming locations
include the bus station, Green Street and Sturrock Street where we see the
action of mostly Stagecoach buses in both the old and latest fleet liveries.
