Classic Buses in Cumbria - 6 The independent transport videos cameras
returned to Kirkby Stephen and Brough at Easter 2024 to record the excellent
rally and running days. The event known as the “Cumbria Easter Rally” is now a
regular fixture in the bus rally calendar.
The event was just as good as ever and coupled with some lovely spring
weather, it was a joy to attend and bring you this DVD programme. We filmed the event from early on Saturday,
30th and on Sunday 31st March. As usual our cameras will take you around the
area, filming at the best locations and also ride on a number of the classic
buses and coaches attending the rally. This event brings the past to life as
the buses and coaches run through the pretty towns of Kirkby Stephen and
Brough. There are a good variety of vehicle types that include the Leyland
Titan, Atlantean, Tiger, Leopard, Olympian and National. From the AEC stable there is the AEC Regal,
Regent, Routemaster and Reliance.
Bristol buses and coaches and an Albion Valiant are also represented,
not to mention other types including Daimler, Optare, Volvo, MAN, Bedford and
an MCW Metrobus - the list goes on! Bus
fleets featured include Barrow, Doncaster and Haslingden Corporations,
Cleveland Transit, Crosville, CMS Cumberland, Ribble, Stagecoach, Hebble,
United, Merseyside PTE, London Transport and Isle of Man Transport. Scottish fleets are also represented with
vehicles from Strathclyde’s Buses, Western and Midland Scottish, Clydeside,
Kelvin, Lowland Omnibuses, Eastern Scottish, Kelvin Central and Highland. Also featured are a good number of
independents. Our filming locations in Brough included the main rally site, New
Road and Main Street. In Kirkby Stephen
we filmed along North Road, Market Street, Victoria Square and outside both the
West and East railway stations. All of
these locations are linked by rides on the different buses and coaches that we
travelled on over the two days of the event. During the time of our visit we travel on nine
different buses and coaches for you to experience in this programme. On Saturday there is a ride on 808 (APT 808W),
a former United Bristol VRT with ECW bodywork to Market Street in Kirkby
Stephen. The next ride is on board 1979
(DEM 779Y), a Leyland Atlantean AN68D with Alexander bodywork from the former
Merseybus fleet to Kirkby Stephen West railway station. From here we travel to Kirkby Stephen East Station
on board LA1204 (XUS 575S), another Leyland Atlantean with Alexander bodywork
from the Strathclyde’s Buses fleet in their striking orange and black
livery. We travel back to Market Street,
Kirkby Stephen on AD1543 (MSD 407), a 1959 Leyland Titan PD3 with a low-bridge
Alexander body formally operated by Western SMT. We then return to the rally site at Brough on
7020 (EKA 220Y), a former Merseyside Transport Leyland Tiger TRCTL coach with a
Duple Dominant Express 49 coach seat body.
Our Sunday rides start on ZS928L (JSF 928T), former Eastern Scottish
Alexander bodied Seddon Pennine VII from Brough into Kirkby Stephen. We then travel to the West station on 202
(M202 LHP), a Volvo B10M with an Alexander PS body in the ‘stripe’ Stagecoach
(Midland Red) livery. From here we make a brief visit to the preserved railway
at the East station, travelling there on board 400 (RMS 400W), an Alexander-bodied
Leyland Leopard in the smart blue and cream Midland Bluebird livery. Our final ride of the day is a brief trip
around Kirkby Stephen on the superbly preserved Albion Valiant, 7 (HUP 236)
with Associated Coachbuilders bodywork of 1949 smartly painted in Economic of
Whitburn livery. Final scenes are filmed
at the rally site at Brough.
We hope you have enjoyed your trip around the superb
Cumbrian countryside featuring these lovely classic buses and coaches.
