The independent
transport videos studios are proud to present to you a video record of
the excellent running day event organised by Matthew Davies, a life long
enthusiast of the buses of ‘Chester Corporation’. The event featured preserved Chester City
Transport buses ranging from Guy Arab No.1 to Dennis Dominator No.99. Two Crosville buses also appeared, SC12, a
Bristol SC and ERG52, a Bristol RELL.
The event took place in the city of Chester on a very hot Sunday 13th
July 2025. The buses covered a number of ‘Corporation’ routes with most
services beginning and ending at Chester Railway Station, which was near where
the ‘Corporation’ bus depot was situated back in the day. Chester is not a large city, the
‘Corporation’ ran routes that covered the areas of Blacon, Lache, Vicars Cross,
Boughton and Christleton, whereas Crosville covered parts of Hoole and Upton as
well as all the ‘out of town’ areas. Our
video programme begins at the Railway Station as some of the buses arrive to
take up their duties. We have put a
camera in the cab of 35 (FFM 135C), a 1965 Guy Arab V with a Massey H73F body for
a journey to ‘the Lache’ as it was locally known! We also have a camera in the lower saloon for
the passenger’s experience on this superbly restored bus that was celebrating
its 60th birthday that weekend!
We return to the city and stay on board for a ride to Saughall Road in
Blacon. We return to the city and alight
at the Bus Interchange and join number 50 (JFM 650J), a 1970 Daimler Fleetline
CRG6LX with a Northern Counties H74F body on a service to Green Lane at Vicars
Cross. Again we have two cameras on
board, one in the cab, the other in the lower saloon. From here we return to the Railway
Station.
Our cameras film the action at
the Bus Interchange and in Foregate Street – the street where many
‘Corporation’ buses could be seen in their heyday. From here we ride as a passenger on board 94
(SDM 94V), a 1980 Leyland Fleetline FE30AGR with a Northern Counties H72F body
also on a journey to Vicars Cross and return to the Railway Station. No video programme about Chester Corporation
buses would not be complete without a ride on No.1 (RFM 641), the 1953 Guy Arab
IV with a Massey H56R body. So we board
No.1 for a ride the ‘the Lache’ with a camera in the cab for the driver’s view
and one in the lower saloon for the passenger’s experience. The ride on this 72-year-old bus is
remarkable, making all the right sounds and bringing back many memories for the
passengers and the passers-by in the streets of Chester.
On
our return we terminate at the Black
Friars Bus Stand in the city and join former Crosville ERG52 (UFM 52F),
a 1968
Bristol RELL6G with an ECW DP50F body for a ride on the C45 route
through Plas
Newton and then change to a C40 route at Upton-by-Chester for the ride
back to
the Railway Station in the city. A
nostalgic ride for your cameraman as the bus passes two of his schools
and the
end of the road where he was brought up!
The C40 route was the route where Crosville’s first REs operated on as
it was close to the head office so they could see how they
performed! Our final scenes are at the Railway Station
as we see Dennis Dart No.52 and Guy Arab 35 leaving for home. The
end of a perfect day. Thank you to all that took part and
organised
this stunning event.
