On Sunday 1st
September 2024 the Devon General Society organised yet another excellent
Classic Bus Running Day, this time centred on the Devon town of Tiverton. A total of seven routes were operated around
the local area including an ‘Open-Top 30 Minute Experience’ service. The independent transport videos cameras
were on hand to record the day for you to remember and enjoy. A total of ten former Devon General buses
were available to operate the services and they are all seen in this programme.
Our filming begins in the morning at
Tiverton’s Bus Station as the buses arrive to take up their duties for the
day. There is a hive of activity to
enjoy as the buses start their journeys full of happy passengers! Apart from a few contemporary Stagecoach
buses, modern cars and high-viz jackets you feel as though you have been
transported back to the 1960s or 1970s with these superb buses and coaches on
show. Most of the filming in this programme takes place in and around the busy
Bus Station showing all aspects of the buses as they manoeuvre around. For your
enjoyment our cameras take rides on two vehicles. Our first ride is on board
503 (503 RUO), a 1964 AEC Regent V with Willowbrook H69F bodywork on route 3 to
Tiverton Parkway Railway Station. We
have put a camera in the cab for the driver’s experience and in the lower
saloon for the passenger’s experience.
We return on this bus to the Bus Station in Tiverton.
Our second ride is on board DL640 (MTT 640),
a Leyland Titan PD2/1 with a low-height Leyland body seating fifty-three
passengers dating from 1951. On this
ride our camera is situated in the lower saloon to obtain the sights and sounds
of this nicely preserved bus. We travel on routes 101 and 106 – Tiverton Town
Services with a good passenger load.
This bus was one of six bought for the Tiverton to Exeter route that had
a very low railway bridge. However,
before they entered service the road was lowered under the bridge so that
normal-height double-deckers could be used.
They remained in service until 1964 and fortunately DL640 was saved and
is now operated by Carmel Coaches for weddings hire and other private hires.
Our filming continues in the Bus Station as
the buses return from their journeys and some start their final rides of the
day and others prepare to leave after a most enjoyable day. Our thanks to the Devon General Society for
organising this superb event and we hope that you enjoy reliving the day with
this DVD programme.
