We were delighted that
independent transport videos were invited to produce the official
DVD to record this ‘spectacular’ event organised by the Southampton &
District Transport Heritage Trust that took place in Southampton on Sunday 28th
September 2025. The event showcased the
largest gathering of former, preserved Southampton Corporation buses that had
ever been seen before. Together with a
couple of preserved Hants & Dorset buses and buses that eventually took
over the routes and services from the Corporation and Hants & Dorset are
seen at this superb event. Of course the
contemporary buses in Southampton, Go Ahead’s Go South Coast Bluestar buses are
seen intermingling with the ‘old timers’!
The event was centred along Pound Tree Road in the city centre. This was once the main centre of operations
of the corporation buses since buses began operating in Southampton over 100
years ago, but is not in use today.
Hants & Dorset had their own bus station, now long gone, so for
today only this is were you could catch a ride on a former H&D Bristol
Lodekka or Bristol RE!
Our filming
begins on Pound Tree Road as the first buses arrive to take up their
duties. Unfortunately the weather is
dull and later turns to heavy rain, which does add atmosphere to our filming,
but the day does end in sunshine! So to
get out of the rain our cameras join Hants & Dorset 1450 (5677 EL) a 1961
Bristol Lodekka FS6G with an ECW H60RD body for the 48 route to Basset Green
Road, back in the day this route would continue on to Winchester. We have put a camera in the cab to see the
driver at work in this fine vehicle and one in the lower saloon for the
passenger experience. It is an
interesting ride as we pass a number of preserved corporation buses as well as
the contemporary Bluestar buses in service.
On returning to the city centre we continue of filming before taking
another ride, this time of Southampton Corporation 318 (318 AOW) a 1962 AEC
Regent V with a Park Royal H66R body for the 15 route to Portswood. This lovely bus has not been seen for a
number of years so it was a great privilege to ride on it. Again we have camera in the cab for the
drivers’ experience and sound effects and one in the lower saloon for the view
and sounds for the passengers. After a
photo shoot at Portswood Road in Portswood we return to Pound Tree Road for yet
more filming there and in Above Bar Street where we see a number of the
visiting buses passing through. The
event closes in style. All of the
Corporation buses head up to Guildhall Square and are positioned for a
spectacular line up. Enthusiasts and the
general public alike get their cameras and phones out to record this unique
line up of Southampton Corporation buses.
Our programme concludes with the buses leaving the Guildhall Square and
heading for their respective homes. A
big thank you to all concerned at the Southampton & District Heritage Trust
for organising and putting on this ‘Southampton Classic Bus Spectacular’.
